Peter Rabbit from the 2018 Royal Mail Beatrix Potter Collection

Limited Issue 35,000

Peter Rabbit has become the most popular of the annual Beatrix Potter collections released by the Royal Mint since 2016. Peter Rabbit was introduced in Potters first little tales’ book and he set the scene for the tales that followed and the characters that have now been treasured for generations.

Peter Rabbit is a young and mischievous rabbit who gets chased around Mr McGregor’s garden despite his mother’s wishes that he and his sisters Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail keep away from the garden. When he escapes and returns home feeling unwell from eating too many vegetables, his mother doses him with tea and puts him to bed.

The 2018 coin depicts, in delightful colour print, Peter helping himself to some radishes during his gluttonous adventures around the garden.

Potter was one of the first to create merchandise based around a fictional character with the release of a Peter Rabbit doll in 1903 followed by a board game featuring everyone’s favourite mischievous bunny.

Beatrix Potter

Helen Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) was an English writer, natural scientist and conservationist. She was best known for her collection of 23 children’s books featuring now iconic characters including Peter Rabbit, Squirrel Nutkin, Jemima Puddle Duck and Mrs Tiggy-Winkle.

Childhood holidays in Scotland and the Lake District amongst the landscape, fauna and flora and numerous pets inspired the stories the children have loved for decades – the first of which was the self-published The Tales of Peter Rabbit.

Throughout her life, Beatrix Potter used the proceeds from her books to acquire numerous farms throughout the Lancashire to preserve the unique hill country landscape. Upon her death in 1943 aged 77, Potter left almost all her property to the National Trust and is credited with preserving much of the land which now makes up the Lake District National Park.

Beatrix Potters books continue to be popular worldwide and have been published in many languages. Her life has been the focus of many films and television series, and her stories continue to be retold through film, song, animation and ballet.

Beatrix Potters stories are beloved amongst generations and have stood the test of time which is why this second collection of Beatrix Potter commemorative coins has become a must-have amongst collectors and admirers of the original 2016 series.
