Featuring an interpretation of the young head portrait of Queen Victoria by former Royal Mint Chief Engraver William Wyon, this Gold Proof Five Pound Coin will be popular with fans of British history as well as collectors.

When Princess Victoria was born at Kensington Palace in 1819, she was fifth in line to the throne after her father and three uncles, none of whom had surviving children to join the line of succession. When she was less than a year old, Victoria’s father, Edward Duke of Kent died, and King George III – her grandfather - died a week later. The throne passed down through her Uncles, and the coronation of William IV made her heir presumptive. A month after her 18th birthday, the King died, and Victoria was crowned Queen.

Victoria was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1837 until her death in 1876 – a reign of 63 years, longer than any of her predecessors. With her husband Prince Albert, Queen Victoria has nine children who went onto marry into royalty and nobility across the continent, earning Victoria the sobriquet ‘the grandmother of Europe’. Victorian Britain saw significant change and expansion during her reign, across industrial, cultural, political, science and military fields.

After her husband’s death in 1861, the Queen withdrew from most public appearances while she mourned Albert, but despite republicanism gaining strength during this time, her popularity saw grand public celebrations of her Golden and Diamond Jubilees in 1887 and 1896 respectively.

Queen Victoria died in January 1901, ending a reign of 63 years, seven months and two days, making her the longest reigning British monarch and Queen regnant in the world until her great-great-granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth II’s reign surpassed her own on 9th September 2015. Upon her death, Queen Victoria was interred beside her Husband Prince Albert in Frogmore Mausoleum at Windsor Great Park following her funeral at St Georges Chapel in Windsor Castle.
