The Snowman by Raymond Briggs
The Snowman by Raymond Briggs is a story told without words. In both the book and TV Short, the illustrations bring to life the adventures that unfold as the tale takes your imagination to the soaring sky on a winter’s day. The TV-Short was released in 1982 – four years after the book was first published – and gave us the now iconic ‘Walking in the Air’ song associated with this winter tale which has now found a place in many families Christmas traditions.
One winter morning, a small boy wakes to a blanket of snow covering the landscape as far as the eye can see. Wrapping up warm, he hurries out to the garden to build a snowman with coals for buttons, an orange for a nose and dressed in a hat and scarf.
As darkness falls, the snowman magically comes to life – and when the boy awakes and creep’s downstairs, a night-time of adventure begins – soaring over rivers and hill, forests and streams. When their adventures are over and they return to the garden, the boy goes back to bed. The following morning, as he rushes downstairs to greet his new friend, he finds only a hat, scarf and some buttons in a melted pile of snow where The Snowman once stood.
Originally conceived to introduce children to the concept of mortality, the story of The Snowman has become a much-loved festive favourite.
