RAF Centenary Vulcan 2018 UK £2 Gold Proof Coin
The Royal Mint commemorates 100 years of the RAF.
Limited Issue: 1000
This is the third of the five limited edition RAF Centenary Gold Proof Coins minted to mark 100 years of the RAF. The reverse design by brothers Richard and Neil Talbot depicts the Vulcan – the most iconic bomber ever to take to the skies.
The Vulcan Bomber
The Avro Vulcan is a jet-powered tailless delta wing high altitude strategic bomber operated by the Royal Air Force from August 1952. The Vulcan was part of the RAFs V-Force – the United Kingdom’s airborne nuclear deterrent during the cold war. The Vulcan was typically armed with nuclear weapons, but also undertook conventional bombing exercises and was operational during the Falklands War in 1982.
The Vulcans were capable of long-distance flights which allowed them to travel across the world representing the pinnacle of British aerospace engineering. In 1961 a Vulcan travelled from RAF Scampton the Sydney – a 20-hour flight with three mid-air re-fuelling sessions and a journey of over 18,500km. Vulcans frequently visited the US during the 60s and 70s to appear in air shows and displays as well as competing in the annual Strategic Air Command’s Bombing and Navigation Competition.
Avro Vulcan XH558 – The Spirit of Great Britain first flew in 1960, was the last of the Vulcan Bombers in military service and the only one to fly after their retirement in 1986. Up until 1992, XH558 performed as part of the Vulcan Display Flight before being converted for ground-based displays.
It was then restored to an airworthy condition by the Vulcan To The Sky Trust with donations from lottery funding and public donations and returned for display flights. Following increasing costs, the company responsible for its maintenance withdrew their financial support for the aircraft.
Across the 10th and 11th October 2015, the Vulcan flew a final national tour split into a northern and southern route marking waypoints significant to the life of the V-Force of bombers and the XH558 herself, and many across the nation came out to see the Vulcan in the skies above the UK for a final time.
The RAF Centenary Collection
As part of the RAF100 celebrations, the Royal Mint united with the Royal Air Force (RAF) to mark 100 years of service. For the centenary anniversary, five official UK £2 coins have been struck in recognition of the brave men and women of the RAF and to celebrate the most iconic aircraft in the world. The collection is officially licensed by the Royal Air Force and the only coins struck to mark the 100th anniversary.
