The Royal Mint commemorates 100 years of the RAF.
Limited Issue: 1000
This is the first of five commemorative coins issued by the Royal Mint in 2018 to mark the centenary of the Royal Air Force – the RAF. The motto engraved on the coin is that of the Royal Air Force ‘Per Ardua Ad Astra’, meaning ‘Through Adversity to the Stars’ and it captures the courage and spirit of both the Royal Air Force and the exceptional people who have pioneered in aviation since 1918.
Royal Air Force
The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the aerial warfare force of the United Kingdom and was formed on the 1st April 1918 towards the end of the First World War and is the oldest independent air force in the world. Over the past 100 years, the RAF has taken a key role in British military history – most significantly during WWII when it fought its most famous campaign – the Battle of Britain.
The RAF describes its mission statement as "...to provide an agile, adaptable and capable Air Force that, person for person, is second to none, and that makes a decisive air power contribution in support of the UK Defence Mission".
Their mission is to support the objectives of the MoD – the British Ministry of Defence, which are "provide the capabilities needed to ensure the security and defence of the United Kingdom and overseas territories, including against terrorism; to support the Government's foreign policy objectives particularly in promoting international peace and security".
At the height of WWII, more than 1 million personnel were serving in the RAF. Today, there are around 36,000 men and women serving in the Royal Air Force either in the regular or reserves. The RAF is made up of 6 components; RAF Regiment, RAF Volunteer Reserve, RAF Medical Services, Nursing Service (PMRAFNS), Royal Auxiliary Air Force and the RAF Police.
The RAF Centenary Collection
As part of the RAF100 celebrations, the Royal Mint united with the Royal Air Force (RAF) to mark 100 years of service. For the centenary anniversary, five official UK £2 coins have been struck in recognition of the brave men and women of the RAF and to celebrate the most iconic aircraft in the world. The collection is officially licensed by the Royal Air Force and the only coins struck to mark the 100th anniversary.
