Shield Reverse

The Sovereign dates back to the times of Henry VII who ordered the issue of a large gold 20 shilling coin. The modern Sovereign followed in 1817 with its new reverse design and features Benedetto Pistrucci’s St. George & Dragon on the reverse, but during the reigns of George IV, William IV and Queen Victoria, Shield Reverse Sovereigns were issued bearing artwork of Jean Baptiste Merlen. Highly collectable coins, these 22-carat gold coins are the ideal physical gold investment.
