The Tailer of Gloucester, from the 2018 Royal Mint Beatrix Potter Collection

Issued: 40,000

This UK issued coin from the Royal Mint features an iconic image of the helpful little mouse from ‘The Tailor of Gloucester’ captured in glorious colour printing making this coin a delightful addition to the Beatrix Potter collection.

Released in 1902, Potters tale is about a tailor whose work on a waistcoat for the mayor is finished by a group of grateful mice who he rescued from his cat Simpkin after he falls ill and is unable to complete the work himself.

The book was based on a real-life incident involving a Gloucester tailor called John Prichard and his assistant who had complete the waistcoat for him, but Pritchard retold the story with fairies completing the work – and the incident became a local legend. Of all her books, Beatrix Potter declared this was her personal favourite from the little tale’s collection.

Each of the Beatrix Potter collectable 50p coins are supplied in a protective acrylic case. This clever design makes them very easy to handle and view whilst keeping them in mint condition. Collect each design and grow a Beatrix Potter coin collection to be proud of and to invest in.

Beatrix Potter

Helen Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) was an English writer, natural scientist and conservationist. She was best known for her collection of 23 children’s books featuring now iconic characters including Peter Rabbit, Squirrel Nutkin, Jemima Puddle Duck and Mrs Tiggy-Winkle.

Childhood holidays in Scotland and the Lake District amongst the landscape, fauna and flora and numerous pets inspired the stories the children have loved for decades – the first of which was the self-published The Tales of Peter Rabbit.

Throughout her life, Beatrix Potter used the proceeds from her books to acquire numerous farms throughout the Lancashire to preserve the unique hill country landscape. Upon her death in 1943 aged 77, Potter left almost all her property to the National Trust and is credited with preserving much of the land which now makes up the Lake District National Park.

Beatrix Potter’s books continue to be popular world-wide and have been published in many languages. Her life has been the focus of many films and television series, and her stories continue to be retold through film, song, animation and ballet.

Beatrix Potter’s stories are beloved amongst generations and have stood the test of time which is why this second collection of Beatrix Potter commemorative coins has become a must-have amongst collectors and admirers of the original 2016 series.
