Piedfort Coins issued by the Royal Mint have been around for many years, first issued in the 1980s.
The term which is French translates to "heavy measure" and goes way back to the twelfth century. Back then, coins would have only been struck for Kings, noblemen and some members of the court for display purposes. Since 1982 we have seen many sterling silver proof coin examples issued, however, in 2017 for the 200th anniversary of the gold Sovereign the Royal mint decided to mint a commemorative Piedfort new Sovereign Coin designs. A true minting first.
Much like the silver proof Piedfort coins, each coin is double thickness and can be great for coin collecting.
