Piedfort Coins issued by the Royal Mint have been around for many years, first issued in the 1980s. The term which is French translates to "heavy measure" and goes way back to the twelfth century. Back then, coins would have only been struck for Kings, noblemen and some members of the court for display purposes. The Royal Mint now produces very limited numbers of Piedforts in Sterling Silver to the public, and it is this rarity, along with the skill and craftsmanship to produce them, their double thickness and superior quality make them highly desirable collector coins.
