This pure gold coin is the third in the Royal Canadian Mint’s celebratory four-coin series celebrating the appearance of effigies of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Canadian coins since her reign as sovereign began in 1953.

The beautiful profile portrait of the Queen which features on the obverse of the coin was created by Canadian artist Dora de Pédery-Hunt in 1990, encircled with the Latin legend "ELIZABETH II D. G. REGINA," or "Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen."

The portrait was the third to appear on Canadian coinage, and the Queen is depicted wearing a string of pearls and beautiful, grand tiara.

The reverse design by Canadian wildlife artist Celia Godkin shows two intricately engraved, overlapping sugar maple leaves pointing downward and attached to a single twig by their respective stems.

As iconic as each other in Canada’s national identity for more than 60 years, the maple leaves and the effigy of the beloved Sovereign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada represent the pride of a nation and a collective sense of identity under one flag and one monarch.

Canada’s Queen

"I am sure that nowhere under the sun could one find a land more full of hope, of happiness and of fine, loyal, generous-hearted people.[…] They have placed in our hearts a love for their country and its people which will never grow cold and which will always draw us to their shores."

- Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) on Canada after her first Royal Tour in 1951

By the time Queen Elizabeth II was crowned monarch of the British Empire in 1953, she had already won the hearts of her faithful Canadian subjects following her first tour two years earlier. They welcomed her with open arms, and after 60 years of reign and 21 visits, the Queen has often been heard stating ‘It’s good to be home’ when reaching Canadian soil.

It is no wonder that the Royal Canadian Mint chose to commemorate their Queen with such a beautiful coin.
