Celebrating the first significant change to the £1 coin since it replaced the £1 note in 1983, this bi-metal 12-sided Silver Proof one-pound Nations of the Crown coin is delivered in a presentation box with a certificate of authenticity from The Royal Mint.

Replacing the round coin which will cease to be legal tender in October 2017, the 12-sided coin first came into circulation on 28th March 2017. The new £1 coins are wider but lighter than their round predecessors.

The Silver Proof coins have a limited mintage figure of 25,000 offered in presentation boxes, with another 1000 minted for inclusion in sets.

The Royal Mint ran a competition and invited the general public to submit designs for the reverse of the new coin. The winner was David Pearce, a 15-year old schoolboy from Walsall whose design Nations of the Crown represented each of the four nations with a floral design. For England, the rose; for Wales the leek, for Scotland a thistle and for Northern Ireland a shamrock.

The obverse design is Jody Clarks portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with the inscription 2017 · ELIZABETH II · D · G · REG · F · D. Inside a small shield at the bottom centre of the coin, a £ symbol is laser-micro inscribed on a fine-lined background which has a hologram effect so that when tilted a 1 appears where the £ sits.

Around the narrow, bevelled edge, the words ONE POUND is inscribed and repeated in tiny lettering 24 times on each coin.

In 2014, George Osbourne announced that due to sophisticated counterfeiters, the ‘round pound; has become vulnerable. Using a process previously known as ISIS (Integrated Secure Identification Systems) which was changed for obvious reasons to aRMour® full-plate technology, The Royal Mints advanced bonding process of different metals using electroplating systems makes these harder to counterfeit than previous coins, as well as being more cost-effective and extending a coin’s life expectancy in circulation by up to 30 years.
