2012 The Royal Mint UK Proof Coin Set - Pre-owned - Read Condition Report
Since 1970, The Royal Mint has produced special editions of coins for collectors which also make great gifts to mark significant occasions including births and weddings.
Unlike previous coins sets from The Royal Mint, the 2012 uncirculated proof set includes the £5 coin – which for 2012 commemorates The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Both the obverse and reverse designs of the five-pound coin have been created by Ian Rank-Broadley.
On the obverse, a portrait created for the Diamond Jubilee shows Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II crowned and wearing the robes of the Order of the Garter. The obverse features a portrait of the young Queen Elizabeth II as she appeared in her very first portrait.
The £2 coin in this 2012 set commemorates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens. The reverse design by Matthew Dent features the recognisable profile of Dickens created from the titles of his most loved works.
Making up the 10-coin Cupro-Nickel Proof set are each of the 2012 issues of the 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 50p and £1 coins.
Proof Coins from The Royal Mint
Proof coins from The Royal Mint are the highest quality commemorative coins, perfect for collectors looking for outstanding examples of craftsmanship and design.
Renowned worldwide for their unequalled sharpness, detail and finish they are the pinnacle of the minter’s art.
Attention to detail during manufacturing is what gives Proof coins their wide appeal amongst collectors.
The dies used to strike Proof coins are hand-finished perfection. Each blank is hand placed into the press and is of superior quality to Brilliant Uncirculated and Bullion blanks. To produce the smooth, sharp finish of proof, each is struck slowly, with less pressure than other finished to ensure the quality of every coin produced.
Every proof coin is carefully inspected and cleaned to ensure the finish is perfect. Due to this extra attention to detail, only 50 Proof coins can be produced per hour – compared to a rate of 3000 per hour for Bullion coins, often meaning Proof coins are low-mintage making them highly desirable collectables as they are often far rarer than other commemorative coins.
